Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group celebrated their 50th Anniversary this year, also moving into a new and very comfortable venue for this production of Hello Dolly! A strong family company, they certainly entertained with this pleasing production. Karen Jamieson portrayed Dolly Levi, `matchmaker and lady of all trades` in a rather subdued laid back manner, but making the part her own with her pleasant singing. Chris Head, in the role of Horace Vandergelder was well characterised and convincing as the tight-fisted storekeeper. Playing his oppressed clerks, Cornelius Hackl, (Sam Hutchinson) and Barnaby Tucker, (Freddie Woodyatt) complimented each other with their comedic antics. A moving `It Only Takes A Moment,` from Sam was certainly the highlight of the show. Jean Sands was a delightful Mrs Molloy, her singing and acting classy throughout. Her singing of `Ribbons Down My Back` was particularly good. Bethan Burton as Minnie Faye gave good support, and there was a nice cameo from Peter Meadows as the Judge. The chorus were very enthusiastic in their roles, coping well with numbers, particularly when the parade passes by, I thought that the waiters gallop scene at times lost its way and hesitancy showed, and the tempo of the production at times lacked pace. However, with a good set and costumes it made Dolly a very solid show.
