Stourport Choral’s latest concert was The Creation, an oratorio written in 1797 and 1798 by Joseph Haydn and considered by many to be one of his masterpieces. The oratorio depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as narrated in the Book of Genesis. The work is structured in three parts and scored for soprano, tenor and bass soloists and chorus. In parts 1 and 11, depicting the creation, the soloists represent the archangels Raphael (bass), Uriel (tenor) and Gabriel (soprano). In part 111, the bass and soprano represent Adam and Eve.

It was also the first opportunity to introduce Stourport Choral’s new Musical Director Dexter Drown who joined in recent months. Dexter’s enthusiasm for the piece and the choir was obvious and when the chorus, dressed in their signature black with red scarves / ties,  were at full volume the sound was glorious.

On this occasion, the choir was joined by guests soprano Alexandra Burstow hitting all the notes with clarity, tenor Daniel Marles with some lovely tones and bass Alastair Elliott with great clear diction. When all three sang together their voices blended beautifully. Excellent support  was provided by the rich tones of alto Mary Sinclair and also featured Jenny Parsons (soprano) and Steve Worley (tenor).

Throughout the singers had the benefit of piano accompanist Angela Allard who once again excelled and when required played with great sensitivity.

Thank you for the usual warm welcome from the members. Stourport Choral continues to grow in stature and it was also obvious that the MD’s enthusiasm for the choir was mutual and I look forward to the Christmas Concert on 13 December to be held at Stourport High School.
