This version of " Half A Sixpence " still delivers on the story line which follows Arthur Kipps's rise from penniless shop boy to rich young man about town, through the loss of his money to the final realisation of where his heart truly lies. But I have to say that I have a lingering preference for the older version and really regret that the show no longer contains " The Old Military Canal " and Ann's wistful " I Only Want A Little House ". However times move on and the present show with H G Wells' well-rounded characters is worth a visit.

It was rather a shame that the otherwise supportive orchestra were somewhat enthusiastic at the outset of the show. The brass instruments really overwhelmed both dialogue and vocals which meant that the important instance of the passing over of the half a sixpence as a token was lost as were most of the vocals of the shop boys "Economy " number. Otherwise the cast performed enthusiastically and I could definitely see some promising future talent among the shop boys and girls.

The simple set had been well thought out to enable the many scene changes to take place without disrupting the action. The back stage crew made a good team and the set made good use of the small space available.
I would like to have seen more attention to detail with the costumes, hairstyles and accessories - this era was so stylish!

With most of the well-known songs associated with " Half A Sixpence " still in place there was a lot for audience to hum and clap along with which they did with much enthusiasm at the final curtain call.
