Wow, they say don’t work with animals, children or perform and direct! The story is loosely based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, renowned striptease artist and focuses on mother Rose following her dream of her two daughters becoming stars. The hall was set in cabaret style serving an interval meal. The immaculate set was designed/built by Brian Saunders, painted by Anne Everall with scenery made by Kit Smith and Fiona Hodder. The brown backstage scenes were transformed into various venues with clever additions and an illuminated gold framed scene descriptor was operated at side of stage. Technical support was very good indeed. Superbly costumed throughout, with children in Uncle Jacko’s talent scene as individual characters looking fantastic. Comedy came through in burlesque with Susan Bowie tassel swiveller Tessie Tura, Jo Walker Mazeppa blowing her horn, and Melanie Todd in electric blue with flashing bulbs as Electra. Tom Tapsfield as Tulsa danced a great duet ‘All I Need is A Girl’. Lauren Higginson, young June performed a number of splits, and with Verity Knox-Watson, sister Baby Louise sang duet ‘Let Me Entertain You’. Kate Welch as Rose gave strength both in voice and acting notable ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses’ and ‘Small World’ supported by a lovable agent, never to be husband Herbie from Stephen Moir. Nicola Dealtry as Louise certainly became a star. The rest of the cast deserve credit as did the dancing Cow. Never lacking attention to detail Gypsy was an outstanding production.
