Darlington’s latest production, based on the very successful 1980’s movie of the same name, was a very great success. Everyone I saw sang from the same Hymn book because this show equalled any professional show, whether on the West End or in the provinces. There were many excellent performances in this very vibrant, electrifying show of singing and dancing. The outstanding performance was given by Ben Conner as ‘Willard Hewitt’ – he never faltered throughout, his facial expressions and his overall performance bringing all of the comedy out. Julian Cound played ‘Rev. Shaw Moore’ excellently, and he was ably assisted by Samantha Morrison as his stage wife.

Beth Stobbart played ‘Ariel’ their daughter in a very lively fashion, whilst Nick Holmes, as ‘Ren McCormack’, really excelled in singing, and his dancing was great. He had an excellent ally in ‘Chuck Cranston’ very well played by newcomer Rob McDougal.

Other excellent performances were given by Claire Wilmer as ‘Rusty’, Claire Bullock as ‘Wendy Jo’, Becky Thom as ‘Urleen’, and really the entire cast deserves a mention but space forbids. Joanne Hand did a magnificent job in producing an amateur group into a professional style unit. Michael Trotter was in charge of providing a real professional sound, although they should accompany the singers and not dominate them. Well done.
