A play in two acts each with three scenes, with one set and seven characters and a story where everyone has hidden motives makes for a good thriller. Despite the first act being a little slow, partially caused by a few too many prompts, (maybe due to first night butterflies) the audience was left with plenty to speculate upon in the interval. Who did the murder and why and what was really going on at the vicarage. In act two the whole cast seemed to settle down and played with much more conviction. Samantha Wood (Diana – The vicar’s wife) and Colin Mitchell (the vicar) gave us strong and very believable characters and Elizabeth Toon, the village snoop, gave an excellent performance, creeping on and off the set, building the atmosphere of the whole production. Jo Smith gave an outstanding performance as Meg, a long time resident in the village, well supported by Bob Wakelin as her husband Tim. Pat Atree and Luke Charles, both long time residents, also gave good performances. All the characters showed great adaptability highlighting changes in temperament, giving light and shade, especially in the second half. As always, I enjoyed this delightful society’s production which was well directed with good support from all the technical crew.
