What a spectacular evening of song and dance was had by all who visited the Windmill Theatre to see the production of Barry Manilow’s Copacabana which was an obvious winner with the Littlehampton residents and visitors as the theatre was packed every night. The direction was clever, the costumes outstanding and the choreography show stopping. This is a story of imagination requiring excellent dancing and singing rather than acting which is mainly a link between one great musical number and the next. Having said that Rachel Smith gave a powerful performance as Conchita, Lesley Mercer was a delight as Gladys and John Carroll was totally convincing as Sam Silver. The Choreographers put together outstanding dance routines with plenty of quality and variety. All the numbers were spectacular with great dancing and singing from the Copa girls and boys, well supported by the principals, various character parts and chorus. The opening was excellently arranged with Luke Palmer (Stephen/Tony Forte) and Nikki Reynolds (Samantha/Lola La Mar) setting the story and from then on leading the cast with excellent singing and dancing. The costumes were outstanding and the lighting did justice to them, adding great atmosphere to the darker moments and brilliant shine and colour to the major dance routines. The small orchestra provided exactly the right amount and volume of sound allowing all the words to be clearly heard without losing any of the feel of the show. This was a faultless and polished production from start to finish
