This was grass roots operatics at it's very best, a village group performing in the village hall with half the village on stage and the other half in the audience. Grandparents with lots of children who started to get involved with all hissing and booing and "It's behind you" and in particular when the ugly sisters came into the audience handing out sweets. A traditional Pantomime with all the basic ingredients, kitchen scene with all the slapstick, ghost scene and the song sheet and a good time was had by all. Buttons ( Joshua Carr), Cinderella (Ruth Haynes) both gave lovely performances with a duet "I'd do anything" from Oliver a highlight, the Ugly Sisters Kylie ( Stuart Jepson) and Britney ( Chris Shelstone) with evermore outrageous and over the top costumes and Dandini ( Wendy Shelstone) and Prince Charming (Sarah Knibbs) kept the piece moving along. Roger Hardup ( John Jones ) and Rapella Hardup ( Adrienne Bond) who had two big numbers both relating to her dire financial situation, were particularly well performed. Fairy Godmother ( Stacey Sagar) made a lovely contribution to the show. The villagers who also acted as stage crew, setting scenes and moving props played there part. This is the groups first venture into Pantomime and the programme asked for feedback to ask if they would like it repeated next year, on the evidence of the matinee performance I think it will be a resounding "YES". Thanks to all at Harlequins for the warm welcome and the hospitality.
