Not an easy show to put on, but this production team certainly achieved very high standards. The set was simple with a great idea of incorporating a choir of approximately 20 superb singers sitting or standing behind the orchestra which was all on stage forming a backdrop for the whole production. There was excellent direction from Kate with plenty of movement on stage which maintained the intensity of the story and the individual characters and I loved the use of the TV screen to help keep us on track with each scene. Sadly the music which was played during a large proportion of the dialogue drowned out much of the spoken words which are so very important in this complex production, however the wonderful dancing and outstanding singing compensated to a great extent. Caroline Bennett (Florence) and Tony Bright (Anatoly) gave exceptional performances in every respect. Listening to their vocals was the treat of the evening, especially the closing of Act one. Alfie Parker (Frederick), Jamie Kluckers (The Arbiter), Phillip Amor (Alexander), Mark Roberts (Walter) and Chloe Holt (Svetlana) all gave super vocal and dramatic performances. The chorus with the backing of the choir and the quite superb dancing, quite a substantial part of it on point, depicting the battle taking place on the chess board all added to an outstanding production. It was evident that a lot of dedication and hard work had gone into the preparation by the production team and performers alike. They should all be proud of the end result.
