Since being released, Calendar Girls seems to popping up in every town throughout the country, but I am sure that Congleton Players contribution will be hard one to do better.
This production was the first of many 'Calendar Girls' that I will be seeing over the next few months and I have to say that your production and all the work behind the scenes really did moved me. Losing someone very close to any illness is the most tragic experience, as I know, and one that I don’t think you ever get over but instead, learn to live with. This is a beautiful script but your team effort made it so much more special and poignant and left quite a special imprint in my mind.
Pamela Mein is such an inspiration, her methodical mind as a director and life experience must make her a delight to work with (well if she isn’t you wouldn’t guess) Every last bit of dialogue was delivered with precision and skill where I truly believed every word.
The cast worked superbly together with a clear understanding of each role and their part in the production and the relationships with each other.
Gill Scott as Chris was perfectly cast , she gave the show the backbone, driving it with such a natural performance. Best friend Annie played by Deborah Roberts did so with emotion, handling the character beautifully. Amongst the undressed, Sheila Hallam as Cora, Helen Sutton as Jessie, Celia played by Karen Wood and Kate Burrows in the role of Ruth all giving credible performances.
Frank McGregor as John gave a brave performance as John which was handled with real care and dignity, as was the case with the whole cast which was so appreciated.
The staging was wonderfully handled with good lighting and effective use of projection – a sterling production
