The director had adapted this musical, so that it worked equally well for adults, and due to the perennial lack of male performers she cleverly incorporated a female gang. Much of the slapstick had been removed so as to suit an adult cast and audience, and the result was a sexy, glitzy show. It was superbly dressed by Cathy Chappell who colour co-ordinated the costumes throughout, and the simple set of two rostra and art deco flats provided bases for the gangsters whilst trees on rollers were quickly positioned for the picnic in the park. A glitter curtain created glamour at Fat Sam’s Speak Easy where the dancers gave polished performances of the excellently choreographed numbers. Ian and his band played at just the right level, sadly not often the case in musicals, and never once overpowered the singers. All the principals were strong and David Methven in particular was first class. I really enjoyed this show and it appeared that the whole company did too: their enthusiasm contributed to a fun and enjoyable evening’s entertainment.
