A fabulous Mayhem Youth Theatre cast of almost fifty young people took to the stage recreating a gangster’s 1920’s New York.
This production of Bugsy Malone was a visual show with great impact, the youngsters achieved total concentration as they came on stage with incredible energy and precision moves. This was a cast aged from seven to twelve years performing for us with confidence and stage presence.
An excellent cool performance from confident Joshua Gossage in the title role Bugsy Malone ,he added a touch of class, along with Alice Gardner-Roberts, as Blousey Brown, who gave a lovely natural performance with a stunning jazz singer voice, her control as she crooned her way through these ballads was very mature, then in contrast with a soft spot for Bugsy, Tallulah was aloof and feisty, very good voice singing and clear diction speaking, a superb characterisation from Astrid Westalund.
The rival gangs really set the action going, Fat Sam’s gang led by Louis James who gave a showstopper performance as Fat Sam, a great accent and spot on moves, and the perfect gangster Jehan Rodgers as Dandy Dan and his tough gang, enhanced every scene. A very good performance from Seb Shaw ,as cleaner Fizzy, who dreams of becoming a dancer. Polly James as Lena Mirelli/Joe shone in all her scenes a natural on stage and one to watch.
Bangles Rebekah Perry, Tillie Seren Ashplant, Velma Lizzie Mc Hugh, and Dotty Delilah Copley,
made a fabulous four, great characterisations. Oscar Brockley as Knuckles and Megan Adams as the Violinist/Cagey Joe made good cameos of these parts.
However this large cast were all brilliant and looked so good on stage, great choreography within their ability, they found easy, well done to the team, with attention to detail in all their costumes, lighting, props, set and an excellent gangster car moved swiftly on and off stage.
This junior company has been formed a few years, Andrew Griffiths their dedicated Stage Director found there was interest in stage craft and performing in this age group, and he and his team are to be congratulated on their achievements with this special production . Every praise for Accompanist, Helen Stidolph who played the whole score for this show, bringing in the young principal’s numbers with sensitivity and Ruth Friend their excellent Musical Director.
It was a fabulous show of talent and I will be very interested to see what you choose for your next
production, you deserve your accolades!!
Thank you so much for your kind hospitality, good to see you all again.
