Adult pantomimes are always fun to do but very risky. However, this did not phase the Hudswell Village Players and their production of ‘Big Dick Whittington’.

From start to finish, it was pure filth which the audience ate up with a spoon!

Performed in the Village Hall, it is amazing what can be created when there is no set, apart from a black box stage along with 2 LED stage lights. To be honest, there was no need for anything more. Even though it is nice to see the spectacle of colourful sets, imaginative lighting plots and special effects, they just weren’t needed as the cast absolutely owned that stage!

Leading the way in the title role of ‘Big Dick Whittington’ was the flamboyant Joe Hodgson. Great flare and creativity with the part. The audience was definitely on his side. He was aided by his faithful companion, ‘Pussy’ played by Amy Fudali. This raunchy cat certainly knew how to use her facial expressions to the max which had us all in stitches.

‘Dame Fitznicely’ and her daughter ‘Alice’ were brilliantly portrayed by Matthew Pegden and Heidi Bradley. These two had great chemistry together on stage and you could really tell they were loving every minute of it. Matthew kept the audience engaged at all times with wondering what he was going to do next! Heidi was perfectly cast for me. Sweet natured and kind hearted which shone through in bucket loads through her characterisation.

Ellis Crosby and John Holliday where the good vs evil of the show. Eillis as ‘Fairy Big Bells’ and John as ‘Evil King Rat’.

Ellis looked amazing from start to finish. Great costume along with good make up and wig meant that he could really bring the naughty side of the character to the forefront.

John was well cast at the baddy. Great timing and deliverance of his punch lines and he really got the audience riled up to hate him even more. The sign of a good panto baddy!

Finally, but by no means any less of a powerhouse than the others, we have Nate Robinson who had the massive task of bringing multiple characters to life. Often with only mere minutes for costume changes.

Nate really worked hard on these separate portrayals and the audience loved it. The true unsung hero of the piece.

Director Jordan Hamilton-Leighton did a great job with this adult panto and he should be congratulated along with everyone else who helped in any way.

Well done to you all and thank you for the invite. Hope to be welcomed back soon!
