The Kingsley Players production of Laura Eason's adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days, transformed Jules Verne's classic adventure into an engaging stage production that’s as heartwarming as it is humorous. It tells the story of cool-headed, immensely rich, slightly eccentric Phileas Fogg who stakes his life’s fortune on a bet that he can circumnavigate the globe in just 80 days. Dylan White is a splendid Fogg, often abrupt yet always gentlemanly, and driven by a fierce determination to prove himself. Passepartout, Fogg’s spirited and loyal valet, brings comedic relief, and his chemistry with Fogg is a highlight of the adaptation. David Lee is outstanding as Passepartout, stage presence in spades, using the third wall with great skill, the audience loved him, this was a confident measured assured performance.
As they journey from Victorian London, through Europe, Suez Canal, India and the Wild, Wild West, encountering eccentric characters and cultural differences Fogg acquired an elephant, rescues a woman in distress, a Mrs Aouda; beautifully played by Kelly White, who he insists travels with them. Yet all the while, tailed by an indignant Inspector Fix (Murray Milligan), convinced that Fogg is the ‘thief of the bank of London’. A talented Kingsley cast Ed Green, Phil Perry, Rebecca Lowe, Jo Oulton, Bill Shardlow and Sally Batty takes on multiple roles which adds to the fun, showing off the versatility and skill of the performers. At the start of Act 2 we were treated to a magical circus scene, it was so much fun, a highlight moment. Thank you, Northwich Juggling Club and Steve Newby. There were trains and boats, an elephant, which was magnificent, and a sailing sledge, these are dextrously assembled by the performers from luggage trunks, clothing and an umbrella.
Director Lynn Peglar having seen this performed at the Royal Exchange knew what she wanted from this Kingsley Players production. Talented cast, supportive crew. Mike Vickers, Kenton Barker and Neil Silcock provided lighting, and sound, splendid colourful costumes provided by Joan Barker and Madeline French. Plus, Laura Eason’s wonderful script. Visually, the play is minimalist using colourful relevant projections rather than relying on an elaborate set, that transports the audience through bustling cities, stormy seas, and exotic locales, that feel seamless and immersive. Of course we need a happy ending, Phileas Fogg with trusted Passepartout make the deadline, winning the wager, the actual ‘thief of the bank of London’ had been apprehended, and of course Phileas Fogg marries Mrs Aouda.
Thank you my invitation. Kingsley’s production of 'Around the World in 80 Days' was a delight. It’s an entertaining, family-friendly show with wit and charm. The audience loved every minute. As did I.
