Choreographer: Wendy Holmes/ Samuel J. Holmes
Anything Goes is mainly a vehicle for the tremendous Cole Porter songs supported by a not so strong storyline, although there are some wonderfully funny lines and performances woven in. With this production enthusiasm and technique shone through, not a weak link and the cast worked extremely hard to make the story believeable. There was superb character acting but Gilly Giles who stepped into the part of Reno at literally the last minute was magnificent. Her partnership with Billy who was also excellent considering he had not had much rehearsal time with her could not have been bettered, she also had great rapport with all on board. This very talented cast presented the show in the very correct style of the time and did full justice to the great Cole Porter songs. As always with this company the choreography was delightfully precise which is something I have now come to expect. All musicals deserve top support from their orchestra and Tom Fry’s ensemble fitted the bill to perfection and the quality of the vocals was a tribute to his musical direction. The costumes were in period and colourful which added greatly to the visual effect as did the clever set, not an easy task in this venue, the cabins and cells and all the staging was handled with speed and efficiency. Lighting and sound completed a bright uplifting toe tapping evening on a rain sodden summers night.
