It always gives me pleasure to visit West Wickham Pantomime society. I know I will be entertained in some form or other. Aladdin didn’t fail. Greeted with a smile from the start by the front of house staff, a great solid workable set as always and blasts of magnificent colour from the costumes, well thought through by the wardrobe ladies, Perfect..!!
Directors James and Mike Simpson, took this script and made it come to life, not a good script for Aladdin, but their direction made this Aladdin entertaining, mainly due to their casting. David Warsop playing Dame (Widow Twankey) worked his audience well, even when things went wrong: well done to him and Hong (Claire Harrison) and Kong (Phillip George) - it’s a good job they knew the words for the song sheet. Tony Dunne (Abanaza), not Kent's best singer, but he coped and gave a solid Abanaza. Rebecca Graydon as Aladdin and Olivia Morris as Princess Jasmine, worked well together and both Ladies had very nice stage presence, Rebecca’s singing voice and diction was uppermost. Putting a lady in as Empress, I’m thinking is this going to work, but Michelle Graydon took this under her wing and took command. Genie (Tony West) and Su Shi (Ellie Parrott) completed this well chosen cast.
Ensemble and dance were well choreographed as usual by a talented Sally Warsop as choreographer, and Nicholas Grant as MD made this Aladdin come to life. All in all this Aladdin is a nice evening's entertainment in many ways, set, costumes cast and a magic carpet…super.
