Alice in Wonderland, based on Lewis Carroll’s beloved story, brings Alice’s adventures to life in a way that captures the charm and cleverness of the original tale. Alice’s plunge down the rabbit hole leads her into a world of madcap encounters and playful absurdity, making it a wonderful experience for both children and adults.

The production was impressively costumed, with characters like Alice, the White Rabbit, the Duchess, and the Queen of Hearts instantly recognizable. The costumes for the animal characters were also thoughtfully designed. The bright, well-crafted outfits brought each character vividly to life on stage, enhancing the magical feel of the performance. Congratulations to Allison Lumsden and her team for creating such wonderful costumes.

Agatha King as Alice delivered an outstanding performance, showcasing remarkable stage presence and commitment. She stayed completely in character from beginning to end, bringing depth and authenticity to her role. Her diction was clear and precise, and her mannerisms were perfection, capturing every nuance of Alice’s personality. Despite the sheer volume of lines and complex scenes, she made it all look effortless. This truly was a first-class performance.

Another busy character was White Rabbit (Jay Seaton) who was flitting from scene to scene and despite his constant concern about being late, he was never late for any of his many entrances - neither did he stop moving all the time he was on stage.

The Queen – “Off With His Head” – of Hearts, truly commanded the stage! From the very start she was imperious and in full control!

The Caterpillar was another outstanding role, not least due to a magnificent costume based on – I am reliably informed – the Society Chairperson’s sleeping bag! Ah well, the things we have to give up for our art!

The other twenty speaking parts were all very well cast and should be proud of their sterling performances.

Technically, set, sound and lighting all matched the high standard of performance. I would particularly like to compliment the use of UV light in the show, especially as Alice entered the rabbit hole near the top of the show. Clever!

Direction, Musical Direction and Choreography were all thoughtfully devised and in keeping with the experience of the young company.

Well done CYMT.
