The Walkerville Society decided that “A Musical Showcase” would be an excellent way to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and to provide some superb entertainment for the local community. It also ensured that Society members stayed together with continuity and friendships maintained. All these objectives were attained with two performances of the Showcase played to two full, most appreciative audiences.

As the title of the production states the evening consisted of excerpts from a number of well-known shows some of which had previously been performed by the Society. The excerpts used enabled its singers to demonstrate their talents. Fine performances were given by Lisa Givens “I Could Have Danced All Night” from “My Fair Lady”and John Armstrong, Alan and Lynn Tompkins with Brooke Hall “Brush up your Shakespeare” from “Kiss me Kate”. They were supported by Sharon Gould, Joyce Hall, Dawn Parrack, Helen Richardson, Carolyn Taylor, Lyn Tompkins and Brian Harland plus five of the younger members of the Society presenting the “The Sound of Music”. Numbers were well supported by a strong chorus who filled the small stage. The production ended with the appropriate finale “So long Farewell” although I feel sure that it will not be long before this Society will be entertaining the local community again. Music was skilfully led by Gareth Miller. The cast were well dressed to give glamour and a sense of occasion without going over the top.

At the end of the evening I was delighted to be invited to present some NODA Long Service awards. Eight medals and bars were awarded to long serving members representing a total of 198 years of commitment to amateur theatre
