Standard Telephones & Cables Operatic Society was born in 1958 with a little known show "Katinka" being presented at Newport's Little Theatre. It was such a success that we followed that with the first Rogers & Hammerstein show to be presented in the city at the same venue, "Oklahoma!". Once again a great success. We were invited to participate in the first ever Waterford International of Light Opera in Ireland. We Won first prize. After that we branched out to the city's professional theatre, The Lyceum Theatre, a 1000 seater. With "Carousel" that show really made our name. Unfortunately the following year 1961 saw the Lyceum sold and demolished.

The firm however had on site its own works theatre so we decided to use it. It was transformed into a wonderful little theatre seating 400 and equipped with a very efficient lighting and sound system also an orchestra pit to boot!

Over the years we performed miracles in that theatre presenting top west end shows such as "The Music Man" "Brigadoon" "Kiss Me Kate" "Fiddler On The Roof" "Flower Drum Song" We have also performed Offenbach's famous Operetta's "La Belle Helen" and "Orpheus In The Underworld".

We have been back to the Waterford festival a further four times and won the second and third prizes plus many individual awards. We won the festival a second time with Offenbach's "La Belle Helen" a glorious romp with superb music and choruses. This lead to BBC Wales T.V. showing the whole show on television, a first for any company in the U.K with an all amateur cast. What a year 1964 was!

We moved into the City's new theatre , The Dolman Theatre, and also shortened our name to Standard Telephones Operatic Society as the original name was quite a mouthful! We had performed seven Welsh premiers at our works theatre and now opened at the Dolman with another "The Most Happy Fella!" A very difficult show which has not been presented anyone else at this theatre. That was back in 1972!

Since then we have presented many new shows to Newport including "Hello Dolly" "Gigi" "Anything Goes" "State Fair" and "Mack & Mabel" just to mention a few. We have also changed our name, once again, to STC Musical Society.

We are now in our 55th year and have presented "Me & My Girl" back in May. We look forward to the future with confidence and in 2014 we hope to present an old favourite and Waterford Festival winner with "Oklahoma!" A show that will never die.

We are always looking for new members and invite anyone who would like to have an audition with us to contact our secretary, Adrienne Cox, on (01633) 669 588 or by post to 12 Jeddo Close, Newport. NP20 2LS.
