Each year the Bronte village of Haworth recreates the spirit of wartime Britain with their “Forties Weekend”. The West Lane Baptist G&S Society very much contribute to that atmosphere with their wartime revue We’ll Meet Again. I was delighted to join many old friends in the Society as I deputised for RR Leslie Appleyard at the first of their two performances.
The evening was a well balanced mix of songs, sketches and monologues with great audience participation, packed with nostalgia, as we joined in with well known favourites made famous by such as Gracie Fields and Flanagan and Allen. This was very much a home grown production enjoyed by audience and cast alike, indeed the cast moved freely amongst the audience. Some very authentic costumes had been produced by both cast and audience – privates, officers, Home Guard, wives left at home and even a black-market spiv – working strictly off the ration book!
Well done West Lane for creating a lovely evening’s entertainment.
