Show report – Waiting for Gateaux
‘Mo-tivators’ must be the most unusual health and fitness club in Lincolnshire; I found out about it when I was invited to see Saxilby Drama Circle’s production of Ed Waugh & Trevor Wood’s hilarious play.
Run by Maureen (Sarah Clark), a big-boned fifty –something widow, in a small hall located in the back of beyond it only attracts a small membership. Donald (Ian Atkinson) attends because he secretly loves Maureen – he’s lost 12 stone so far – if he doesn’t ask her out soon there’ll be nothing left of him. Jackie (Rachel Mitchell) attends to get away from her straying husband, and she’s started to bring her young sister Whitney (Chloe Thurston) along to prevent her getting into more trouble. There is lots of jaw exercising which is rewarded with a weekly treat such as pizza, fish & chips, chicken korma or gateaux.
Things could be improving when Sophie (Janet Pick) visits, claiming to be a researcher for a reality TV programme come to check out the club but when a snow-storm arrives it brings with it revelations which will change their lives forever. This is a well-structured play containing a phenomenal amount of ‘one liners’ that generated a huge amount of laughter. However, when the sad parts of these character’s lives are revealed you can’t help but hope that things will turn out right for them.
Superbly written and very well directed– awesomely acted – guaranteed to “get to you”. No wonder the enthusiastic audience delivered sustained applause at the end of this show.
Congratulations to all who were involved in this touching production.
