Although Bizet wrote quite a number of operas, this one is probably known as his "other" opera as Carmen and The Pearl Fishers are the only two that are performed in opera houses these days.  The setting for this production was really lovely with the white sails giving an illusion of being on the shoreline, together with the beautifully lit circular entrance making a very dramatic background.  The props added to the magical atmosphere, particularly the large fish and other interesting items carried by the chorus who were dressed by Rachel Whitman who also made a number of the props and particularly the masks - a very interesting set and good use was made of the sails in shadow play.  The chorus were in good voice, ably assisted by a pit chorus.  The chorus movement on stage was interesting and well choreographed.  There were excellent performances from all four of the principal characters in this magical tale of a love triangle although at times Ian Parrett's lovely tenor voice was a shade too light against the other singers.  However, he gave a strong performance as Nadir as did Peter Grevatt as Zurga and their rendering of that famous duet was much enjoyed.  Luci Briginshaw's lovely soprano voice soared into the ether and Toby Sims gave a mystical but wily performance of the sinister High Priest.  The large orchestra (The Sussex Concert Orchestra) were a joy to listen to and were never too loud for the action on stage.  Many congratulations to all involved in giving Hastings audiences the opportunity of seeing this opera full of magic and mystery.
