The Next Generation is the brainchild of Mike Bridges, a past Chairman of the parent Society. This is the Society’s commitment to the future of amateur theatre by introducing younger members of the community to stage skills and helping nurture the developing talents of the young people. The group started in 1995 with sixteen members ranging from 8-12 years old. This season ended with some 30 members some of whom are already taking part in productions with the senior Society. Tuition is undertaken completely by volunteers from the adult Society with the Society’s current Chairman Steve Mason being a very willing participant.

The Showcase evening was an active demonstration of the skills learnt during the year, including tap-dancing by all members with excerpts from Fame followed by a Fred Astaire medley. There was a number from the adult Society’s forthcoming production – “Summer Holiday” – a promotional opportunity? The evening was completed with the full cast singing “Do you hear the People Sing” a number which brought tears to many an eye.
The evening concluded with the presentation of two NODA Junior Awards to Beth Ramsay and Owen Johnstone representing three continuous years each which I was delighted to present. Paul O’Driscoll, a past member of the adult society has also given a trophy to the Next Generationn to be awarded annually to the student who has made the best progress in the past season. This year it was given to Robert Sabourn – a very deserving winner.

The future of amateur theatre and societies would seem to be assured with the talents displayed this evening.
Thank you for the invitation. Well done.
