The easy-flowing banter and rapport between Algernon Moncrieff (Adam Lewis-Plant) and Earnest or John/Jack Worthing! (Paul Derosiers) in Act I, set the pace for the rest of the play, which did not disappoint in any way.

All characters were extremely well interpreted and acted. In particular the young ladies, Hon. Gwendoline Fairfax (Rebecca Seakins) and Cecily Cardew (India Moynihan) carried off their parts with a confidence and ease not always evident in younger actors.

Heather Woodward as Lady Bracknell offered possibly a slightly softer characterisation than usually portrayed without diminishing the gravitas of the character in any way. In particular the famous ‘handbag’ line which Heather managed to put across forcefully but without the usual “wait, then deliver it as loudly as possible” often witnessed, was a refreshing change.

Miss Prism (Trish Broadley) as the twitchy, mousey governess together with Merlin Beedell as the Rev. Canon Chasuble provided a very entertaining double-act and Jay White in his stage debut as the Butler/Manservant definitely proved himself.

It was obvious that the cast had enjoyed working together and this was reflected in the production so ably directed by Grainne Murphy.

Congratulations to the set designers Colin and Nance Hand, Jill Haskell for costumes and to everyone else behind the scenes too numerous to name without whom any amateur production would not get off the ground.

With thanks to Gill Gordon-Williams
