Sadly, this was the last production from WP Drama/Wanstead Players and therefore was a performance of mixed emotions but one that the company can certainly be proud to bow out on. This excellent play provided a good vehicle to show the talents of this company and celebrate the excellent contribution that they have made over 100 years to local theatre in East London and Essex.
The Dresser is a challenging play to produce, heavily reliant on efficient direction and the two main actors. With a stellar cast assembled and the expertise of Chris Keates in the Director’s chair, this was a production not to be missed.
The relationship between Sir and Norman was at the heart of the play and this ebbed and flowed between anger, love, hatred, dependency and need. Phil Clarke gave an extraordinary performance as Sir. His wonderful ability to envelop a character and make an audience believe they are watching that person on stage was evident. Billy Knowles played Norman and gave another excellent portrayal.
There was perhaps a responsibility on the cast and crew to do justice to the company in this, their final production. If so, then that responsibility was easily carried by all involved. Congratulations and thank you for a tremendous play that will stay long in our memories.
