By the time I got home from this wonderful production I couldn’t remember what sequence the songs and events took place or who actually performed what. All I could remember was that I had had a really great afternoon and wished that more societies had a similar idea. The best description of the entertainment was a street party, to celebrate the Jubilee, held in a village hall. The decorations were superb with the two long tables laid up in red white and blue with tasty nibbles to pick at during the first act which was opened with great gusto by John Covey, the master of ceremonies. From the moment the curtains opened until the interval this cast of sixteen with their fast flowing production of songs, gags and sketches kept the audience laughing and joining in the singing of all the old well known songs from the first and second world war era. They topped act one with a hilarious melodrama with the goody, the baddy and the maiden in distress, accompanied by the appropriate piano music, all brilliantly over acted leaving the audience in fits of laughter. We were then served a superb cream tea so smoothly and efficiently the average professional caterer would have been impressed. The second half was a little shorter, but equally great, finishing with ‘Jerusalem’, ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and ‘Rule Britannia’. What a brilliant way to celebrate The Queen’s remarkable 60 year reign. We all left singing or humming and feeling very uplifted.
