Godspell was performed in London in 1971 to great acclaim with David Essex taking the role of Jesus. The messages are ever relevant as we were taken through St Matthew’s gospel with this exceptional cast searching for answers from the parables of Jesus. A brilliant approach to staging the piece by fine Director John Roberts, who uncovered the hidden emotional talents of this cast with a new dimension production. A master stroke by Brynmawr O S to stage this thought provoking musical for their talented cast of actors and singers who all brought their own special skills to the stage Set in present day with an interesting tubular nightclub set and their excellent band on stage to add impact as the parables are told The performance by multi talented Jason Price as Jesus was outstanding. His command of the stage and easy charismatic presence was special to watch along with another excellent performer Huw Roberts as John the Baptist and Judas showing well timed interaction with his cast Essentially an ensemble piece and this ensemble gave their all. I liked the Street Philosophers and experienced Chris Richards as Club Manager, perfect diction and control in every character he plays. Appropriate and original choreography throughout by Gina Roberts moved this production along never distracting from the central theme and then extreme feathers for the temptation scene ! An emotional production, a brilliant score and technical perfection from this dedicated company Congratulations to all and Director John Roberts MD Tony Williams, Choreographer Gina Roberts, thank you for a special night! Congratulations to Jason Price (Jesus) who was awarded The Grattidge Trophy for Best Performance 2012 by Regional Councillor Derek Grattidge.
