This year ACE Chorus has relocated from the agoraphobic vastness of The Clyde Auditorium to the much more intimate atmosphere of The New Auditorium, located within the Royal Concert Hall building. Possibly, this formed part of the decision to use a much reduced orchestra (only five in the pit), plus, with a sudden change of performing dates, we saw a significant reduction in numbers of performers. That said, however, the quality of the performance did not suffer. Throughout the evening the chorus displayed a first class rapport with MD Richard Johnston in the wide variety of musical styles put to them. This ranged from opera “Va, pensiero” from Verdi’s Nabucco, through the musical world “Seasons of Love” from Rent, “Luck be a Lady Tonight” from Guys and Dolls, to the popular realm with Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”,  a Burt Bacharach Medley, and Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing”. This fine mixture of musical styles was replicated in the solos and duets on offer. In the first part, Alan McPherson gave a fine rendition of “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” shortly followed by “Black Velvet” originally recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Alannah Myles. Tonight the song was given a quality performance by Catherine Usher. The penultimate item in Part One was “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar portrayed with much feeling and emotion by Lorna Girvin.

Part Two maintained the high standard of the earlier programme, showcasing Alex Lawrie with “”I Want to Wake up With You” and Robert Brogan with a very enjoyable performance of “Three Times a Lady”.

After the final programmed number by the ACE Chorus of “I’m Still Standing”, we were treated to a rousing megamix of three numbers from Grease. What a way to finish!

Thank you ACE for a wonderful evening’s entertainment and for the kind hospitality shown to us at our visit!
