What a lovely evening shared with old friends at St Augustin’s Church in North Shields, visiting Tynemouth Gilbert and Sullivan Society; who presented their Festive Concert ‘‘A Celebration of All Things Gilbert and Sullivan and Christmas’.
Unfortunately, due to current pandemic restrictions, no solo items were able to be sung. However, the choral material was extremely well performed, and more than welcome from an audience point of view.
The concert was superbly conducted by Musical Director Kaye Rudd, with sensitive and able accompaniment on both piano and organ by Robin Beaumont.
It was a ‘game of two halves’ with the first part consisting of beautifully presented G & S favourites, from HMS Pinafore, Utopia Limited, Pirates of Penzance, Patience, and others.
The second was a lovely selection of festive pieces which put us all in the Christmas Spirit.
Kaye’s ensemble of about thirty voices were very well drilled and controlled; producing some fine, lusty singing, incorporating fabulous balanced harmonies, light and shade, crescendo and diminuendo; It was a real treat to listen to.
The whole ‘feeling’ of the concert, from both the performers and the audience, was the emotional will to be back together, and the all-embracing sound of doing what we all love, and in that respect it was a total success.
Thanks to Kaye for being MC as well as MD, who mentioned special memories of two dear members who had recently passed away; Nigel Corbitt – Former Chairman, and Pam Boak – Chairman and Treasurer.
Thanks and congratulations to all concerned for a great night’s entertainment.
