Marton Operatic Society are inviting applications to direct our next show, Iolanthe by Gilbert & Sullivan.

We are an amateur performing group based in Blackpool. We have performed an annual Gilbert & Sullivan show since 1932. For the last 16 years our performing venue has been the Lowther Pavilion Theatre in Lytham St Annes, but in 2019 we will be at the Thornton Little Theatre in Thornton Cleveleys for the first time. We generally have a company strength of about 30 to 35, of all ages. It is our policy to encourage children to participate and in our last show (The Pirates of Penzance) six under-16s took part.

Performance dates are 22 to 26 October. We normally rehearse at St Paul’s Church, Marton each Wednesday from early May, with principals rehearsing each Friday from early / mid June. A pre-production meeting takes place earlier in the year involving the Director, Musical Director and other main people on the production side.

The Director will be in overall charge of floor rehearsals after some initial musical rehearsals. He or she will need to work closely with the MD and have oversight over other areas such as costumes, props and set design, though there are normally people appointed to these jobs. He or she will be part of a 5-person audition panel to choose principal roles, usually on a single audition evening in June.

When applying please explain why you wish to direct the show, your experience and your ideas for the show – especially whether you prefer a traditional approach or envisage a “concept” production, whether and to what extent you wish to vary the text or the story and whether you would delegate certain aspects – eg choreography – to others.

Applicants are asked to contact our Secretary, Pat Skovlund. Her email is If you need any further information, contact either Pat (phone number 01253 826404) or the Chairman Tony Alman or 07710 438561. Our comprehensive website is and we are on Facebook.

We need to hear from applicants no later than 30 November please. Should applicants also – or alternatively – be interested in our 2020 show would they please confirm this. The show will be The Mikado and it will take place in October 2020.
