Dane read music at Nottingham University, where he was Organ Scholar in his first year, and followed this with a year of postgraduate study on piano at the Birmingham Conservatoire. His early career as a pianist took various forms – concerto and recital soloist, accompanist and opera repetiteur. He has broadcast many times, on BBC, RTE and commercial radio and television.
He was a regular member of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company music staff from 1992 until its closure in 2003.

For several years Dane was a part-time repertoire coach on the musical theatre course at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and piano tutor and musical theatre coach at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, which awarded him an HonRBC in 1999. ‘Coachees’ have included Jason Donovan (Sweeney Todd), Rhydian Roberts (X Factor finalist), Maureen Lipman (Glorious), Jasper Carrott (The Mikado), Ulrica Jonsson (The Pajama Game), Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Barbara Dickson, Henry Goodman, Liliane Montevecchi, Leslie Phillips, and the opera singer Sir Willard White.
Dane is a Fellow of both the Royals Schools of Music and the London College of Music, an Associate of the Royal College of Music, and a Licentiate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity College London. He is an entrant in International Who’s Who in Classical Music.
In April 2011 he was Music Director of a London/Beijing musical theatre workshop at the Central Academy of Drama in China, in conjunction with the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Arts Educational School. He has run vocal workshops in Switzerland, Italy and the UK.
From 2008 until 2017 he was Head of Music for the Musical Theatre Department at Arts Educational Schools, London.
