It’s a Small, Small World (Short Course)

“The details are not the details, they make the design.” Charles Eames

Are you interested in model making to convey theatre design?
Or is your interest simply as a stand-alone hobby for example making doll’s house furniture?
Do you want an opportunity to focus in detail on this specific aspect of design?
Are you in search of a fun, relaxed learning experience to develop model making skills and produce some miniature works of art?

If the answer is yes, we have the perfect short course for you!

This intense short course will focus on ‘advanced’ model making skills and knowledge. It is preferably for those who have some prior model making experience, e.g. any student who has previously undertaken a Set Design course where model making was a key element of the course, (however please note that this is not essential). There will be no expectation on students to design a production during the course, as all model making assignments will be advised by the tutor.

By the end of the course you will

NB Students should be prepared to engage in very small-scale detailed work (remember your glasses!)

It’s a Small, Small World will run from Saturday to Tuesday and can be combined with Costumes Through the Ages to make a week-long design course

Tutor – Gregor Donnelly

What students say…

“Being challenged, positively, to think in new ways and being pushed well out of my comfort zone to discover capabilities I had underestimated in myself.”

Tutor: Gregor Donnelly

Gregor was born in Edinburgh and has had a long career working in the National Health Service and Voluntary Sector in a variety of both clinical and managerial roles.
Having always had a passion for theatre, both through performing on stage and then designing for stage in the amateur arena, he decided to take the plunge and apply to train as a Theatre Designer. So, after a 20-year health service related career he successfully gained a place on the highly respected Motely Theatre Design course which was based in the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Gregor resigned from his job, sold his Edinburgh flat and his ‘new’ car (a red sporty one!) and headed south to a studio flat in London with a few boxes of possessions and no job!
Having qualified as a Set and Costume Designer from Motley in 2011 he has designed numerous productions both in the UK and abroad.
