NODA Theatre Summer School 2022 - Evening Classes
Evening classes on Monday and Wednesday are volunteered and hosted by our tutors to allow students a taster of something a little different, mix with students from other courses and have fun. Each will last a maximum of 90 mins and have a slightly less formal feel than daytime classes.
We hope you enjoy the selections for 2022.
Please sign up for your first and second choices. We will aim to make sure that you get your first choice on at least one of the nights, where possible but numbers are often tight on some courses so bear this in mind (spaces are NOT allocated on a first come first served basis). Please make your selection before Midday on Sunday 31st July 2022.

An Introduction to Playing with Character Mask
with Jon Dixon - The session will encourage playfulness, spontaneity, ‘being in the moment’ and working effectively as an ensemble. We will use character half-masks to create unique characters and encourage dynamic and expressive performance and the full use of our bodies, voices and emotional range in performance. -
Design for Actors and Directors
with Julia Locascio - Designer and director Julia Locascio leads a session on the principles of visual and sensory storytelling. Students investigate the narrative, character, and emotional potential of space, colour, light, and texture. Can a shift in light be as captivating as a great Shakespearean soliloquy? Julia says yes, and makes the case for why. This session is intended for non-designers interested in design or those wishing to deepen their collaboration with designers. That said, designers and visual artists of all experience levels are welcome. -
Potted Pantomime – Aladdin in Performance
with Ian Good - A practical workshop to explore this celebrated genre of theatre. By exploring a short panto, students develop their understanding of the parts, where they came from and how they developed. Students need to be ready to take part in the demonstration! -
Singing in Performance
with Paul Vickers - Using well known musical theatre repertoire from Les Miserable, Miss Saigon and Matilda students will workshop useful performance exercises aimed at improving execution of songs resulting in a toolbox of techniques they can use for any music. -
Sweat and Text
with Jim Mangenello - ‘Show me how you move and I’ll tell you how you speak. Speak to me and I’ll tell you how you move.’ Speech is a physical act. In this session, we’ll break a sweat in order to crack open texts that could otherwise seem cornered, musty, dead. Bring clothes you can move in freely and water. -
The Three-Picture Scene: bringing a story alive through tableaux
with Val Monti Holland - Working in community settings often involves people who are new or inexperienced in using theatre to tell stories. This is a simple technique taken from the Flower 125 Health Programme resource pack which offers tools of engagement to those who work with children and young people (www.flower125.co.uk). It helps participants to think through the components of a story without needing to say a word or speak. Devised while I was working at HMP Leeds, this is often a safe enough way to use drama for those who are vulnerable to help them think through the lead up to and consequences from their actions. -
Transitions (to avoid blackouts in performance)
with Sarah Osborne - This workshop will be an exploration of ways of moving from scene to scene, place to place and time to time in theatre. By using movement, music and ensemble work we can enhance the flow and storytelling of productions of all genres – this evening class will give ways of thinking about how to create interesting transitions and provide the opportunity to try out possibilities. You are invited to come armed with specific scene changes you would like to explore. Perfect for performers and directors who are happy to try things out practically.

Investigating Shakespeare
with Molly Dobbs - During this session we’ll deep dive into the structure of Shakespearian verse, and how we can discover not only character development tools but acting beats from the metre, line, verb choice and punctuation. We’ll dissect a chosen speech and talk about the socio-politics of Shakespeare’s England and how this knowledge can enhance the audiences experience of the piece. We’ll talk about religion, gender, and hierarchy roles, and of course, his many double entendres. -
Make a play in an hour and a half
with Sarah Osborne - Starting with games and improvisation/devising exercises we will work as an ensemble to create a performance in 90 minutes – please don’t expect anything serious or deep - this class will be about working together through play and ridiculousness to see what we can discover and create. This is a very practical workshop – expect very little in the way of talk and lots of jumping in and doing stuff. Perfect for people happy to get involved as actors and performers in a light-hearted and frivolous way -
Song writing for beginners
with Ian Bustard - A fun session where every participant will write a song either by themselves or in a group. Bring an instrument if you have one but don’t worry if you don’t. No previous music experience required. Just an open mind and a melodic heart. -

If so, come along and join in for a beginner’s session introducing you to the discipline and giving you the opportunity to give it a go!! An active class for any level of Stage Combat experience. Voice and Text
with Susan Tordoff - A voice class linking the voice work to text, specifically speaking a dramatic text and the connection of the two. Please dress comfortably.
