Bursaries
Bursaries of £250 are awarded by the NODA Regional committees to assist students with their course fees. Applications will be considered from students who are society, individual or joint members. Applications are welcome (the deadline for Bursary Applications for 2012 has passed) from new students, first time bursary applicants, or students who are applying to study a different course to one they have studied before. (Please note that students are limited to two bursary applications in their lifetime as a NODA member)

Exploring the role of a Deputy Stage Manager
Tutor:
Spend a week exploring the world of the Deputy Stage Manager, moving on from the basics of stage management to examine, in depth, rehearsal room practice, working with a cast on notating moves, decoding the mysteries of 'THE BOOK', the intricacies of show calling and working with prompt desks, and the skill of pulling a company together and working with a production team.
Students will enjoy:
- honing their skills in running a book and calling a show
- look in depth at an individual project from a first rehearsal to first night
- work with actors and directors in a rehearsal room situation

The Magic and Mystery of Musicals

Looking at a variety of work, the course focuses on combining the skills of singing and dancing in the musical theatre style with fun practical sessions on a fantastic selection of song and dance numbers from some of your favourite shows.
The course will build your confidence, stretch you physically and vocally and give a real sense of achievement as rehearsals lead to a short performance piece at the end of the week presenting selected song and dance pieces from those you have worked on in classes. The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber

Building on the success and popularity of our 2011 course, this year you will explore the work of the most popular composer of musical theatre in an exciting practical week of workshops.
You will explore the vocal techniques and skills necessary to sing the work of Andrew Lloyd Webber in solos, duets and ensemble pieces, and also approach the work as an actor, examining the lyrics, storytelling and context of the songs, along with short examples of dialogue.

The RSC's Open Stages initiative in conjunction with NODA Summer School 2012 presents a unique opportunity. Spend an exciting and inspirational week with a tutor from the Royal Shakespeare Company in the fantastic surroundings of Warwick University.
Building on our hugely successful 2 day course last year, the workshop aims to give those with little or no experience of Shakespeare, the techniques and confidence to take on the incredible work of the world's greatest playwright, or a fresh approach for more experienced performers and directors who want to do more.
In a week of intensive practical workshops, you will work with a practitioner from the RSC exploring:
- Voice, movement and direction
- Unlocking the text and the actor's ability to perform it.

Whether you are interested in appearing in, studying or directing Greek plays, this course will offer you a practical week of hands-on involvement with the vibrant and exciting work of ancient Athenian playwrights and performers.
More Greek tragedy has been performed in the last few decades than in any period since ancient times, and you’ll be introduced to some of the major dramatic themes, characters and debates that have fuelled this contemporary fascination. You’ll consider the issues and possibilities arising from working with a play in translation, and be guided through the major practical challenges of performing ancient drama on modern stages.
In a series of fun practical workshops, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the distinctive style and structure of ancient dramas, the presence and role of the chorus, the ancient use of dramatic space, and the challenge of tackling extended descriptive or argumentative speeches. Your experienced and knowledgeable tutor will guide and support you as you:
- Experiment with text, space and movement in practical workshop sessions
- Explore the relationship between chorus and protagonist
- Uncover the different types and techniques of speech used in ancient drama
- Develop contemporary solutions to the challenges of performing an ancient Greek text

A BRAND NEW course for budding directors of straight plays or musical theatre
Have you ever dreamed of directing your own show, be it a straight play or a musical, with adults or with young people, and never quite had the confidence or the knowledge you need to take the reigns of your own production? Well this is the course for you.
During the week, you will enjoy a practical approach to developing a toolbox of ideas and skills to enhance your work as a director.
Tackling all the basics of directing, the course will guide you through the complex process of selecting a text, creating a concept, basic blocking, how to create a company from audition to ice breaking and bonding exercises, how to explore text and move it from page to stage, characterisation, style and working with a production team.
Throughout the week you will:

- Enjoy spending time with others, sharing experiences, insights and practical tips

Little Shop of Horrors

One of the schools longest standing and popular courses, this week gives musical directors of all levels of experience, a 'warts and all' overview of exactly what is involved in being a Musical Director, alongside the opportunity to work with a live band at the end of the week and try out your skills. The course covers every aspect of the role from choosing a production, the audition process, rehearsal planning and part-singing, right through to choosing the band, running the band call and the production itself. You will discover what works and what doesn't work.
Dependant on your experience, it will also cover basic conducting technique and an opportunity to play in the band yourself.
Your experienced tutor will guide and support you as you:
- Learn how to get the best from your on and off stage colleagues
- Work with a live band, soloists and chorus singers
- Experience everything an MD has to manage!
- Enjoy working with like minded colleagues and a unique support network as you explore the role of Musical Director.
New 3 Day Intensive Courses for Summer School 2012
This year, Summer School is offering a series of four brand new intensive 3 day courses.
Students can sign up to one of these courses and experience an intensive 3 days of workshops on their chosen subject, or mix and match two of the short courses and enjoy a whole week of the Summer School experience. Courses can be mix and match so if you're a lighting designer who fancies a spot of mime, or a physical theatre buff who likes creative sound design, you can combine the courses in whatever way suits you best.
The course will begin with an evening session on the day of arrival, followed by 3 full days of intensive workshops and ending at 5pm on the last day of the course.
Students will also have an option to opt for an additional night's accommodation at the end of their course to enable them to take part in the social activities on campus that evening.

In a series of practical, hands-on sessions, students will discover the techniques used by professional lighting designers. The course will provide you with a good insight into how to produce a lighting design to enhance your next production from concept to final presentation on stage.
You will :
- Enjoy working with fellow students to practically explore the many and varied technical skills involved in designing the lighting for a production
- Using project based examples, learn about basic lighting design theory and the huge creative potential that good lighting design can bring to a production
- Find out how to choose the right equipment for the job, work with a script and liaise with the director and other members of the production team.
- Discover the many other fascinating aspects of this creative process.
The course is aimed at students with a good basic technical knowledge of lighting, who wish to improve skills in the creative field of design.
Intensive 3 day course

A fun and challenging 3 day course designed to introduce you to the principals of designing theatre sound, from creating and recording sound effects, editing and making up show discs to an understanding of the principles of creating a soundscape for a production. The course is hands-on with the emphasis on practical involvement.
You will work with our experienced professional tutor who will guide you through the process of designing sound for a show and discovering how truly creative the process can be.
Build and enhance your confidence as a sound designer as you:
- Examine the design process and look at the creative aspects of sound production
- Enjoy working with fellow students to discover a practical toolbox of skills you can take home with you
- Experience the opportunity to work with high quality technical equipment hands-on and look at how to transfer your skills to a show.
The course is geared towards those with some basic knowledge of sound production who wish to take their work to the next level.

Whether you are an actor looking for a new way of working or a director searching for a unique approach to staging your work, this course will give you a host of innovative tools for any performance. Throughout the week you will explore the thrilling physical theatre style of Frantic Assembly (whose productions include 'Othello', 'Stockholm', 'Beautiful Burnout' and most recently 'Lovesong'.) You will begin by getting physically ready for the style of work and focussing on the core skills needed to produce a piece of physical theatre. Fun and practical exercises will help you to build confidence and physical awareness and you will gain experience in methods of devising physical theatre.
Our experienced professional tutor will support and guide you as you:
- Explore how to take a theme or stimulus and develop it into your own unique piece of physical theatre incorporating text, movement and music.
- Enjoy a highly collaborative and creative process working with your fellow students in an energetic and exciting way
