Show Report
This was a very refreshing production with many new (and younger) faces and much enthusiasm. The smaller orchestration, which was very effective, only required part of the pit to be removed, leaving quite a lot of forestage which was used to good effect and allowed the company to appear closer to the audience. Michael McFarlane (Marco) and Cameron Fergusson (Giuseppe) worked well together. Congratulations to Cameron on his debut as a principal performer. Jilly Martin (Gianetta) and Caroline Warburton (Tessa) also made a good pairing. This year Robin Ozog tackled the role of The Duke of Plaza-Toro, carrying it off with great style. Elaine Young was likewise solidly cast as the Duchess. Vicki McLaughlan was charming as Casilda and Craig Rose was an able Luiz. I particularly enjoyed Bridegroom and Bride and When a Merry Maiden Marries, which was well staged and sung particularly well, and Then One of us will be a Queen. The tableau at the end of Act I was particularly effective, due to staging and clever lighting.
